Charles Peter Archibald Ewart Jennings was the father of journalist Peter Jennings, a Canadian-American. He was the only host of Peter Jennings World News Tonight from 1983 until his death from lung cancer in 2005.

At the age of nine, he started his career as a radio DJ for a Canadian station. In the early years of CJOH-TV in Ottawa, he began his professional career hosting the Saturday dance program Saturday Date and anchoring neighborhood newscasts.

He was one of the “Big Three” news anchormen, along with Tom Brokaw of NBC and Dan Rather of CBS.
