Hidden Details Most Fans Missed From AEW All Out 2022
AEW has developed a reputation for exceptional PPV events, and that includes staging an all-time great event at All Out 2021. So it was that, although the card on paper wasn’t quite as riveting in 2022, fans still approached All Out 2022 with lofty expectations. With the intrigue surrounding the Jon Moxley vs. CM Punk rematch, the crowning of an Interim Women’s World Champion, and who might join the ranks of mystery Jokers for the Casino Ladder Match, there were plenty of reasons for interest going into this year’s show, not to mention a number of matches that promised good to great action. But what happened at the PPV that might have flown under the radar of most wrestling fans?
For The First Time In Over 12 Years, Edge And Christian Won PPV Matches Over The Same Weekend
Edge and Christian have had an intertwined journey through wrestling, starting as friends who were wrestling fans with a dream, long before they broke into the business, progressing to being tag team partners, opponents, and more. Each man faced a premature retirement due to injuries before being able to return to the ring in recent years. Interestingly enough, the last time both men won PPV matches over the same weekend was when they both emerged victorious at WWE Royal Rumble 2010—Christian retaining the ECW Championship over Ezekiel Jackson while Edge won the Rumble match itself. This weekend, the duo achieved less impressive wins, but wins nonetheless. Edge teamed up with Rey Mysterio to beat Judgment Day at WWE Clash at the Castle.
The next night, Christian picked up a bit shadier win over an injured Jungle Boy at AEW All Out, with a huge assist from Luchasaurus to get the job done .
The Four Pillars Of AEW Break Their All Out Curse
Early in AEW’s history, MJF, Darby Allin, Jungle Boy, and Sammy Guevara were unofficially proclaimed the Four Pillars of AEW—a quartet of young stars at the foundation of the company who would presumably grow along with it. The four stars are undoubtedly talented, but have enjoyed varying degrees of success. Interestingly, not a single one of them had won a match at All Out 2019, 2020, or 2021. Jungle Boy came closest in winning pre-show matches in 2019 and 2021, but never won on the main card (Guevara joined him in this feat in 2022). Allin had the most dismal record, not missing a single All Out, but losing his matches in all three previous outings. The narrative changed in 2022, though. First MJF, as the masked Joker, won the Casino Ladder Match. From there, Allin not only won, but picked up the pin for his team with Sting and Miro against The House of Black in a Trios Match.
All Out 2022 Had The Second Ever AEW PPV Main Event Between Two Former WWE World Champions
While some critics have suggested AEW is too reliant on WWE alumni, the company does deserve some credit for featuring non-WWE talent in the main event picture. While Hangman Page vs. Kenny Omega is the lone PPV main event not to involve any former WWE stars, almost all other PPVs have included at least one homegrown, international, or indie-developed talent mixing it up with a former WWE headliner, including Page, Omega, MJF, and Eddie Kingston. The only time two WWE alums closed a PPV before was when Jon Moxley beat Chris Jericho at Revolution 2020; All Out 2022 became the second ever such PPV when Moxley vs. CM Punk closed out the event.
Only Three Wrestlers Who Won At AEW All Out 2021 Won At All Out 2022
AEW only promotes four annual PPVs, making each of them momentous in nature. It’s only top names who appear consistently on these PPVs, let alone who win at them. A great deal changed between All Out 2021 and All Out 2022 including new faces arriving in the company, and a number of talents moving up to the PPV mix, and it’s interesting to look back and recognize just how many names worked their very first All Out event this year. More so, it’s worth noting that out of 11 matches on the main card, there were only three men who won at both events. Kenny Omega retained the AEW World Championship in 2021 and won the Trios Championship with The Young Bucks in 2022. Chris Jericho beat MJF in 2021 and Bryan Danielson in 2022. Finally, both CM Punk and Jon Moxley won their matches at All Out 2021, but because they were pitted against each other in 2022, only one could repeat, and that man was Punk.
The Blackpool Combat Club Had A Top-To-Bottom Bad Night
The Blackpool Combat Club worked its first PPV as a unit at AEW Double Or Nothing in May, but wound up losing an Anarchy in the Arena brawl against The Jericho Appreciation Society. They fared better at Forbidden Door, winning three out of four of the matches their members were involved in, they were back to struggling at All Out.
First Wheeler Yuta and Claudio Castagnoli came up short in the Casino Ladder Match. Then Bryan Danielson suffered a pin at the hands of Chris Jericho. Finally, Jon Moxley dropped the AEW Championship to CM Punk in the main event, leaving the faction winless across the show.
All Out saw a number of important developments, including CM Punk regaining the world title, MJF returning, Toni Storm striking gold, and The Acclaimed putting on a star-making performance. The stage is set for a couple interesting months ahead before AEW’s first two-night PPV for Full Gear in November.
