Tonight’s episode begins with the 126 running through some safety drills. The Austin Fire Department had them do these drills as a way of preparing them in an event of a terrorist attack. It was a way to remind the firefighters as well as the paramedics to keep a cool head in the field and, while the 126 personally failed their tests, the whole thing reminded Owen of his past. Owen has lived through a terrorist event. He survived 9/11. He had to rebuild a firehouse following that tragic time and so Owen doesn’t like joking about these drills. He takes them seriously. He also had a reason to believe that another attack could be around the corner.
Owen remembered his time working as an informant for the FBI. The feds believed a motorcycle gang known as the Honor Dogs stole some ammonium nitrate because they planned on building a bomb. However, Owen felt ill at ease after he ran through those safety drills. He felt that if he approached the Honor Dogs that maybe he could convince them to not go through with their plan. He stopped by their biker bar during his off hours. He approached the guy in charge and he confessed that he was working with the feds. He also said it wasn’t too late to stop their plan before anyone got hurt.
Owen confronted the Honor Dogs about the missing bomb material. He was hoping to appeal to them and so he was shocked when they clearly had no idea what he was talking about. They hadn’t stolen any ANFO. They weren’t planning a terrorist attack. Owen didn’t even need to step in because the FBI got a warrant and they arrested everyone at the bar. This included Owen. He was arrested for impeding a federal agent because Special Agent Kacy told him to stay away and he hadn’t.
Kacy didn’t want to listen to Owen when he said the biker gang weren’t building a bomb. None of the feds wanted to admit they made a mistake until someone blew up the biker bar. Owen’s people were the first on the scene and they provided first aide. Owen himself stayed with Kacy until she died from her wounds. There were a lot of dead bodies on the scene. Most of them were the Honor Dogs. The feds assumed they weren’t storing the ANFO properly and that it must have accidentally exploded on them. And so Owen had to be the voice of reason.
Owen said that the biker gang wasn’t behind the explosion. He said they were targeted. He agreed to talk to Red Pickney because Pickney ran the place and Pickney barely survived the bombing. Owen also went with Ty O’Brien. They went to Pickney. They talked to him about any radicals in the group and he mentioned someone. He said they kicked out a guy who wanted to burn everything down. The Honor Dogs disagreed with him because they weren’t about hurting civilians or first responders. And so Pickney said this guy was Andy.
As in Ty’s nephew, Andy. Andy was troubled. He wanted to join the Honor Dogs ever since he was a kid and it must have hurt when they rejected him. Hence the bomb. He planted the bomb at their bar to kill them off. He just wasn’t done with the bomb making material. He had enough to build an even bigger bomb and so Ty and Owen told the feds everything. They went to Andy’s home. His wife and son were gone. They were last seen two days before with a mystery man that everyone assumed must have been Andy.
Andy made sure to grab his family before he did anything. Owen thought he’s carefully planned every moment of his attack and to Owen it didn’t feel like Andy wasn’t done with just blowing up a biker gang. Everyone assumed he wanted to hurt people for the sake of hurting people even before he joined the Honor Dogs. Which was why Owen spoke up when he overheard the feds getting worried that Andy might have gone to Mexico. Owen thought differently. Owen said that Andy moved the bomb making material after he saw it and that meant he was staying at the biker gang’s house without them knowing.
The feds went back to the property. This time they brought along Ty and left Owen behind. Ty told Owen to stay back because he was worried about what else Andy had planned. Owen also needed to warn 126. He returned to the firehouse. He gave a compelling speech about how they’ll face whatever comes their way and then went off book. All the firefighters were called to the capitol building because it was being reported a massive bomb was found there, but Owen didn’t trust it. Owen went into the building against the advice of the feds.
Owen found out the bomb in the building was a fake. It was just supposed to drive everyone outside. Owen then had the people outside ushered back into the building while he looked for Andy. He eventually found Andy and he also learned that Andy wasn’t the sociopath they all thought. Andy was a radical. He just didn’t come up with the bomb idea. It was someone else named Mikey. Mikey kidnapped Andy’s family to force him to carry out a terrorist attack. Andy’s family was found and rescued by Ty. And this Mikey fellow was also arrested.
With his family safe, Andy was free to turn himself in. He just couldn’t stop the bomb. The bomb was put on a timer and so Owen drove the van it was in into the river. The bomb created a bit of a splash when it went off, but no one was hurt and a major terrorist event was averted.
Andy will still go to jail because he knowingly entered a conspiracy to attack a government building, even if he changed his mind about it towards the end. And so Ty blamed himself because he promised his sister he would look after Andy and now Andy was going away for twenty years.
Only Owen made sure to grab dinner with his son after all of this. He and his son have been through a lot and his son has thankfully never tried to overthrow the government.
