What are your thoughts on Freddie Mercury and Mary Austins relationship?

Publish date: 2024-05-28

I just saw an interview with the actress who plays Mary in Bohemian Rhapsody and she said that while digging for info on the real Mary she learned that many Freddie fans despised their relationship and she feels the hate for their relationship comes from a lack of understanding. Most people can’t understand this mutual love and them basically being soul mates without the sex. They had a different relationship and many of his fans aren’t quiet about their hate for it.

Also many fans hate that he left his fortune and mansion to Mary and not his family or Jim.

She was his best friend. He even sang about it.

I lived with a gay man for years, and was his best friend. He trusted me, and knew that I genuinely loved him like a brother. I never abandoned him, and stood by his side when he got the news that he was poz. I was by his side until the day he died, while his family had abandoned him when he came out.

Perhaps it was the same type of thing.

Why would they hate her? They were friends for years, she worked for his companies, was there when he was dying of AIDS.

I think people are jealous that he left her most of his estate. They probably think she was a gold digger, hanger-on, etc. But Freddie trusted her.

Just watched a documentary about Freddie Mercury's last days. He seems he loved her (emotional) and Hutton (sexual). I don't understand why he didn't leave more to Hutton though.

I hope she bought herself some eyebrows with her inheritance.

Didn't she kick Hutton out of the Garden Lodge, pretty much the day after Freddie died?

by Anonymousreply 5November 16, 2018 12:13 PM

Loved Bohemian Rhapsody!!

Fag + Hag

What more needs to be determined?

by Anonymousreply 7November 16, 2018 12:36 PM

R5, I don't think that's true. She did inherit the house but IIRC she gave him time to leave. Why would he want to keep living there anyway? Freddie gave, he says loaned, him money to build a house elsewhere which I believe was finished before Freddie died. At some point he'd have to leave.

My thoughts are they were very close loving friends. It was completely up to Freddie who he left his money to, he left Jim Hutton enough to buy his own home or to start up his own business. Not everyone can handle large amounts of money or maybe even want it. For all his fans know he might have discussed this with Jim before he died.

R1 that's beautiful , you sound like a wonderful person.

I thought Roger wrote "Youre my Best Friend" about his wife, Freddie just happened to sing it.

People get all in a tiz about Mary bc she causes a problem with female fans claiming he loved women and gay fans claiming he was 100% the gayest gay that ever gayed. The truth is probably way more complex than that and frankly none of our business. He had his reasons. THE END.

OP I just watched this last night also. In other videos I learned how rabid Queen fans are. I don't begrudge her at all. Freddy told her it would be hard. They were soul mates.

R11 I know every fandom has its rabid crazies but never thought of Queen fans being that way. Shocking to me.

Here’s one video where Lucy speaks about her learning that many hardcore Freddie fans hated Mary and his relationship. It starts around 7:30

Rabid Queen fan here, r11. It's Freddie, not Freddy.

r10, John Deacon wrote You're my best friend.

I don't have an opinion of Mary. Freddie obviously had his reasons when he decided to leave her most of his money.

by Anonymousreply 13November 16, 2018 4:23 PM

Yes, Deacon wrote "You're My Best Friend" about his wife.

And Freddie allegedly wrote "Killer Queen" about one of his gay friends!

He did also write "Love of My Life" about Mary.

Sometimes I wish George Michael had had a presence in his life like Mary. Actually there were many things about Freddie that I wish George would've figured out.

by Anonymousreply 15November 16, 2018 6:11 PM

R15

George lived longer though.

by Anonymousreply 16November 16, 2018 6:18 PM

George was his own worst enemy. Freddie was more confident.

by Anonymousreply 19November 16, 2018 6:25 PM

George Michael talks about hearing about Freddie Mercury's death after learning that his boyfriend, Anselmo, was HIV positive.

Doesn’t the movie portray them as lovers? I haven’t seen it and I’m not really a Mercury/Queen fan, but that’s the impression I’ve gotten.

by Anonymousreply 21November 16, 2018 6:33 PM

I walked into the movie late, but he proposed to her and she says yes, then later she tells him he's gay. So perhaps the movie portrayed them as lovers, but not for long.

by Anonymousreply 22November 16, 2018 6:47 PM

The movie takes place from 1970-1985.

Mary and him were together for 6 years before they ended it. The movie shows them get together in 1970 and them break up in 1976.

by Anonymousreply 23November 16, 2018 6:50 PM

Still though, George Michael's 'Somebody To Love' tribute to Freddie was sensational, perfect.

by Anonymousreply 24November 16, 2018 6:58 PM

I think both Freddy and mary were total asshole fuckwits who did not give two fucks about other people, they both used each other and were total shitty people.

by Anonymousreply 25November 16, 2018 7:04 PM

Fans always hate their idol's closest female associate. Wife, girlfriend, PA, whatever, the fans HATE that bitch and make a hobby of tearing her to shreds!

Because we aren't the only jealous bitches on the internet.

by Anonymousreply 26November 16, 2018 7:19 PM

She was his one true love

by Anonymousreply 27January 16, 2019 10:27 PM

Mary’s baby was actually Freddie’s son I’m pretty sure.

by Anonymousreply 28January 16, 2019 11:59 PM

I thought it was because she took it upon herself to be Freddie’s gatekeeper and a lot of his exes who he kept around were denied access.
